Located in Destelbergen near the Westveld district in Sint-Amandsberg, Wijveld offers a unique farming experience centred around self-harvesting for individuals and families to reconnect with the land, their food, and each other.
At Wijveld, participants pay a fixed amount at the beginning of the season for unlimited access to the farm’s bounty of vegetables, herbs, and small fruits. The process is straightforward: families are encouraged to engage in the harvesting process together, guided by clear instructions provided via email and on-site. This hands-on approach not only ensures fresh, flavourful produce but also instils a deeper appreciation for the seasonal rhythms of nature.
Beyond the act of harvesting, Wijveld serves as a gathering place for like-minded individuals to come together and build community. Through events such as picnics, communal workdays, and reflective meetings, participants can connect with fellow harvesters and dedicated farmers who tend to the land. These shared experiences not only strengthen bonds but also deepen understanding of the interconnectedness of food, land, and people.
Embracing organic agriculture, the farm prioritizes practices that minimize environmental impact and promote long-term ecological health. By reducing unnecessary transportation and packaging, Wijveld not only lessens its carbon footprint but also encourages mindful consumption habits among its participants. Additionally, the farm’s proximity to its patrons promotes eco-friendly transportation such as walking or cycling.
Wijveld is a CSA farm which stands for Community Supported Agriculture: agriculture supported by the local community. “Because we grow almost all vegetables, the risk of a complete crop failure is almost non-existent. The lower yield of one vegetable is compensated by the higher yield of another.” Wijveld ensures stability for its farmers by providing financial security through advance payments. This enables farmers to focus on cultivating high-quality produce without the pressures of commercialization, while the diversity of crops grown mitigates the risk of crop failure, ensuring a steady harvest throughout the season.
Wijveld embodies the principles of sustainability, community, and shared ownership of the land. By participating in the farm’s activities, individuals not only benefit from the fresh, nutritious food but also nourish their souls by reconnecting with nature and each other.
